A car with an expiry date

A car in Singapore needs a Certificate of Entitlement, and it lasts ten years. In September 2026 a Category A certificate alone went for a record S$133,009. Yours runs out at midnight, so you take the old girl out for one last drive, down to the Merlion, for old times' sake.

There is no villain for the first thirteen levels: just a clock, a city and everybody else's driving. Each level adds one new kind of trouble, and a new car joins your Garage after levels 2, 4, 7, 10 and 13.

Out of the heartlands: Yishun, Mandai, the CTE

Yishun Heartlands (level 1) is two lanes, pastel HDB blocks and your first swarm of PMDs, banned from footpaths since 2019 and out in force anyway. Mandai Night Safari Stampede (level 2) is a dark forest road where boars and monkeys freeze in your high beams or bolt across without warning. Then the CTE Jam Escape (level 3): three lanes, the first speeders, and the Jam Wall, a solid rank of stopped cars with exactly one gap in it.

When the weather turns: floods, buses, the Orchard downpour

Bukit Timah Flash Flood (level 4) is the canal doing its yearly trick of becoming a river: sheet water kills your grip and stalled cars sit mid-lane. Clementi Bridging-Bus Bedlam (level 5) is the MRT down again, with free bridging buses pulling out three at a time and stranded commuters crossing wherever they like.

Orchard Road Downpour (level 6) is where the chapter shows its teeth: a sudden storm, slippery steering and the first road-rage rammers, who do not just fail to see you. They aim.

The supper belt: Newton, Geylang, Kallang, Shenton Way

Newton Hawker Rush (level 7) fills the air with satay smoke and sends your first mini-boss after you: Ah Huat, GrabFood legend, whose mee goreng is getting cold and who has decided that is your fault. He tails, cuts in and brake-checks until you shake him.

Geylang Supper Siege (level 8) is cars double-parked three deep, and Kallang Eras Tour Gridlock (level 9) empties a 55,000-seat stadium onto your junction. Then Shenton Way Nights (level 10): four lanes of cones, supercars, and a veteran Taxi Uncle in your mirror with his high beams on. He has been driving since before you were born, and he does not forgive.

Tunnel, coast, circuit, and DEXTER

KPE Tunnel Bedlam (level 11) is nine kilometres of concrete with no shoulder, rammers in the dark and a second, meaner Jam Wall. ECP Coastal Squall (level 12) bursts out onto the coast with supercars at full throttle, until a squall blows in off the sea. Marina Bay Street Circuit (level 13) is the chapter's best joke: you take the Esplanade exit, notice the ERP gantries are off, and then a marshal waves a blue flag. You have merged onto a live Formula One race.

At Marina Bay Final Run (level 14) your phone buzzes: DEXTER, 12,047 trips, five stars minus a tenth, and the Merlion is his drop-off point. He and his fleet block the road, and plain bumps barely scratch him: hold boost and ram him head on, or bait his lunges into the barriers.
