Daily Challenge

One run. One twist. Everybody gets the same one.

Every day at Singapore midnight the game picks a level and bends one rule about it. The same level, the same bent rule, for every player on earth. Then it is gone.

The campaign is 28 levels and it ends. The Daily Challenge does not. It takes one level out of the campaign, applies a modifier that changes how that level behaves, and gives it to everybody at once. Tomorrow it will be a different level and a different modifier, and today's run will not come back.

It has its own leaderboard, its own streak, and its own rewards. It never touches your campaign save.

The day starts in Singapore

The challenge rolls over at midnight Singapore time, UTC+8, no matter where you are sitting. That is deliberate. If the day flipped on your own clock, a player in Auckland and a player in London would be running different levels while looking at the same leaderboard, and the board would be meaningless.

So if you are in the UK, today's challenge appears at about five in the afternoon. In New York it lands at lunchtime the day before. Wherever you are, you and everyone else are driving the same road.

The modifier is the whole point

A modifier is a single rule change, announced before you drive. There are 21 of them, and they are not cosmetic: each one changes what a good run looks like. A few of the regulars:

ModifierWhat it does to you
MONSOON SIARain from the first metre. Grip is a rumour.
BLACKOUTIsland-wide power trip. You drive by your own headlights.
ROAD RAGE HOUREverybody woke up and chose violence.
PAPER BODYThe workshop uncle is on leave. Your car takes double damage.
KOPITIAM CLOSEDNo kopi, no spanner, no shield. Raw skill only.
PMD UPRISINGEvery third vehicle is a banned PMD. LTA has given up.
MANDAI JAILBREAKThe zoo gates failed. Boars, monkeys and the otters are all out.
PSI 400Haze you could chew. N95s are worth gold today.
TUAS LONG HAULThe road grew overnight. Pace yourself, uncle.
COE RECORD HIGHEvery scrape costs more than it should.

The rest turn up on their own schedule: SEVENTH MONTH, NDP REHEARSAL, DURIAN SEASON, HONG BAO DRAW, L-PLATE SEASON, SCHOOL HOLIDAYS, KAYPOH JAM, BRIDGING SERVICE, SHIFT CHANGE, CHIONG EXPRESS and KANCHIONG RUSH.

Sundays stack two of them

On Sunday the game does not pick one modifier. It picks two, and runs them together as DOUBLE TROUBLE. Blackout plus monsoon. Paper body plus road rage. The pairings are drawn from the same date seed as everything else, so Sunday is the same shape of unfair for everybody.

It is the hardest run of the week by a distance, and it is where the daily leaderboard gets interesting.

Streaks, and the paint you cannot buy

Clear the daily and your streak goes up by one. Miss a day and it goes back to zero. The streak is worth real things:

  • Coins scale with it. A clear pays a base amount plus a bonus for every day of the streak, up to a cap. A long streak roughly doubles what a clear is worth.
  • Seven days in a row unlocks the Kaya Toast paint for every car in the Garage. It is the one colour in the game that is not for sale at any price, so it is a genuine signal of who turns up. It comes with the One Week Warrior trophy.
  • Thirty days in a row earns the Kiasu Calendar trophy, which is exactly as hard as it sounds.

A streak counts a clear, once per day. Retrying does not inflate it, and it does not decay while you are mid-run.

Retries, scores and the board

You can play the daily as many times as you like. Your best score of that day is the one posted to the daily leaderboard, which itself resets when the day does. There is no revive on the daily: if you go out, you go out, and you start the run again from the top.

Your best daily score ever also feeds the Grand Total board, which adds up your personal bests across the campaign, all five bonus modes and the daily. That board is the reason a finished campaign is not a finished game.

And a daily run can be turned into a challenge: send someone the link and they get the identical seeded run to beat. That is Kaki Duels, and a daily duel expires with the day it belongs to.

Four things that actually help

  • Read the modifier before you drive, not after. The briefing tells you what changed. PAPER BODY is a different game from KOPITIAM CLOSED, and driving both the same way is how a streak ends.
  • When pickups are off, gaps are your only health. Under KOPITIAM CLOSED there is no spanner coming. Drive like the health bar is the score, because today it is.
  • Do the run early in your own day. The streak is on the Singapore clock, and the commonest way to lose one is going to bed.
  • Sunday, take the first run as a scouting lap. Two modifiers interact in ways neither does alone. Learn it, then go again.

Common questions

When does the Daily Challenge change?

At midnight Singapore time, UTC+8, wherever in the world you are playing. The clock is fixed to Singapore on purpose, so everybody is running the same level on the same day and the leaderboard means something.

Do I get the same daily challenge as everyone else?

Yes. The level and the modifier are worked out from the date itself, so every player in the world gets exactly the same run. Nobody gets an easier draw.

Can I retry the Daily Challenge?

Yes, as many times as you like. Your best score of the day is the one that counts for the leaderboard, and the streak ticks over once when you first clear it.

What do I get for a daily streak?

Coins go up with the streak, to a cap. At seven days in a row you unlock the Kaya Toast paint, which cannot be bought at any price, and the One Week Warrior trophy. At thirty days you get the Kiasu Calendar trophy.

Does the Daily Challenge affect my campaign progress?

No. It never unlocks or locks a campaign level, and losing it costs you nothing but the streak. It is a side dish, not the main course.
